She is one of the most successful artists in the history of popular music, who carved out parallel careers as an actress and a business mogul. Her midas touch was even in evidence when she released her first children's storybook, "The English Roses" in 2003. It immediately became the fastest-selling children's picture book in history! Now, Madonna has turned her hand to directing with the release of the romantic movie "W.E." Madonna Louise Ciccone was born in Bay City, Michigan, on August 16, 1958. She left the University Of Michigan's School Of Dance to try her luck as a dancer to try her luck as a dancer in New York. She landed a job with "Born To Be Alive" disco star Patrick Hernandez, but began to believe that her future would lie in music rather than dance, and joined a group called The Breakfast Club- as the drummer! She soon graduated to vocalist, and in 1982, the head of Sire Records heard her demo tape and signed Madonna as a solo artist. Her debut album sold 3 million copies- and her second launched her into the pop stratosphere "Like A Virgin" was released in 1984, the title track sparking worldwide Madonamania! Her controversial coffee table book was greeted with outrage in some quarters and her private life was constant fodder for the tabloids. But with each new album, Madonna reinvented herself, changing images as quickly as she changed musical direction. The world's top-selling female artist of all time. Madonna has sold more than 300 million records worldwide in her three-decade reign as the queen of pop music. She was inducted into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2008. She has enjoyed success in a number of other fields, from children's book authors to fashion designers. Maverick, the record label she launched in 1992, generated over $1.2 billion in sales under her control. Having racked up credits as an actress, writer and producer on a long list of screen projects, Madonna's latest incarnation puts her in the director's chair for "W.E." a movie centered on the infamous 1930s romance between Britain's King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson.
