Lil Wayne was born Dwayne Michael Carter, Jr. In New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 27, 1982. A gifted student who enjoyed drama club - he played The Tin Man in a production of "The Wiz" he was mentored by the owner of Cash Money Records from the age of 9. He teamed up with Rapper B.G to release the album "True Story" in 1993, and by the time he was 15 years old he was riding high on the Billboard charts as a member of The Hot Boys. His debut solo album, "Tha Block is Hot" was released in 1999, and certified platinum after hitting the top 3 on the U.S. charts. Subsequent albums, including 2004's "Tha Carter" and 2005's "Tha Carter II" as well as a string of cameos on hits by artists such as Destiny's Child, Chris Brown, T-Pain and Fat Joe- established Lil Wayne as a major force. A string of mixtapes only increased anticipation for another album. When he finally released "The Carther III" in 2008, it debuted at the top of the Billboard charts. Released on his own Young Money Entertainment label- which is also home to the likes of Nicki Minaj and Drake- the multiplatinum album spawned the chart-topping hit "Lollipop" and earned him 4 Grammys. Having fallen afoul of the law, he underwent an enforced absence for most of 2010, but still managed to release two chart-topping albums during the year!
