Steven Tyler was born Steven Tallarico in Yonkers, New York, on March 26, 1948. Initially a drummer, he formed his first group when he was 16, and went on to play in a number of local bands. By the time he moved to Boston to team up with Joe Perry, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, and Ray Tabano to form Aerosmith in 1970. He had switched to lead vocals. Tabano was replaced by Brad Whitford, and the band signed to Columbia in 1972. By the late 1970s, thanks to albums such as "Toys In The Attic." Aerosmith was one of the world's most popular hard rock groups. But the pressures of success and the excesses of the lifestyle took a heavy toll. By the 1980, Perry and Whitford had departed and Tyler was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash. The lineup was restored in 1984 and, with a new label. Aerosmith began to enjoy a new lease on life. In 1986, Tyler and Perry appeared on Run D.M.C.s cover of "Walk This Way" the track introduced Aerosmith to the new generation of fans. The hit single "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)" was followed by such smashes as "Love In An Elevator" "Janie's Got A Gun" "Crying" and "Crazy" culminating in the 1998 worldwide chart-topper "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" from the "Armageddon" soundtrack. Inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame 2001, Aerosmith has now sold more than 150 million albums worldwide. Despite his occasional health problems, the periodic rumors of the band's strife and his numerous side projects- such as his latest incarnation as a judge on "American Idol" Steven Tyler continues to front the band he formed more than 40 years ago!
