"The Green Hornet" was created by George W Trendle and Fran Striker as a spin-off from their hugely successful 1930's radio series. "The Lone Ranger" in the original stories, newspaper publisher Britt Reid, great-nephew of The Lone Ranger, was a masked vigilante who fought crime with the aid of a gas gun, accompanied by his trusty driver, Kato, at the wheel of a gadget-laden car called "Black Beauty" Their radio adventures ran from 1936 until 1952, with a succession of actors following original star Al Hodge in the leading role. The 1940s saw "The Green Hornet" adopted into two movie serials, the first starring Gordon Jones, and the second starring Warren Hull, Kato was played in both by Keye Luke, a Chinese actor who had found fame as "Number One Son" in the popular Charlie Chan detective movies. Keye Luke subsequently enjoyed great success playing Master Po in the 1970s tv series "Kung Fu" the star of the show was David Carradine- but the actor who has been widely tipped to play the lead was Bruce Lee. A martial arts expert, Lee had come to prominence in the '60s. Playing Kato opposite Van Williams in the TV series version of "The Green Hornet" angered at being overlooked for the "Kung Fu" lead, Lee moved to Hong Kong, where his "Kato" fame was the springboard for a stellar yet tragically short-lived movie career. "The Green Hornet" has spawned numerous comic book lines since the 1940s, but rumored movie revivals. With the likes of George Clooney and Jet Li mentioned, failed to materialize-until Seth Rogen and Jay Chou brought the Emerald crimefighting duo back to the big screen.
