Avril Lavigne Her 2002 debut CD sold over 16 million copies and earned eight Grammy nominations, while her "Sk8er Punk" style inspired a worldwide army of young girls to don neckties over t-shirts and go heavy on the eyeliner, not bad for a 17-year-old from a small Canadian town. Avril Ramona Lavigne was born in Napanee, in Ontario, Canada, on September 27m 1984. She grew up singing gospel in church and country music at local fairs and festivals. At the age of 12, she taught herself to lay her Dad's guitar and began to write her own songs. At 14, Avril won a talent contest in Ottowa and got to appear on stage with Shania Twain in front of 10,000 people. Two years later, during a trip to New York, she was offered a recording contract by Arista Records. Avril moved to Manhattan to work on her debut album. In New York, Avril worked with some of the best producers and writers in the business- but she was unhappy with the results. A change of coasts brought a change of luck- in Los Angeles, she teamed up with a new producer and soon the songs began to flow. Her debut cd, "Let Go," was released in 2002. Singles such as "Skater Boi" and "Complicated" catapulted the 17-year-old onto the pop charts, while a legion of fans adopted her punky style and feisty outlook. Her 2004 album, "Under My Skin" topped pop charts worldwide and spawned a string of hit singles. It was followed by 2007s "The Best Damn Thing" which contained the global chart-topper "Girlfriend" to date, she was sold more than 30 million records around the world. She has dabbled in acting, most notably voicing a character in the 2006 animated movie "Over The Hedge" launched her own fragrance and clothing lines, and is actively involved with a number of charitable causes. Her 2006, marriage to Deryck Whimbley ended in 2009, although they have continued to work together with the Sum 41-star producing tracks for Avril's upcoming fourth studio album.
