Born in Houston, Texas, on March 24, 1973, Jim Parsons threw himself into acting while attending the University of Houston. He appeared in 17 plays in three years, performing everything from Samuel Beckett and Bertolt Brecht to "Guys and Dolls" His hectic schedule often entailed starting the day working in children's theater, rehearsing in the afternoon and tackling weighty European stage plays in the evening. He was also a founding member of the Infernal Bridegroom Productions theater company. After earning an undergraduate degree, he spent two years at the University of San Diego and the old globe, where he earned his MFA. Parsons moved to New York, where he worked in theater and landed a number of roles in TV commercials, appearing in spots for the likes of Quiznos, Stride Gum, and FedEx. He made his TV debut in a 2002 episode of "ED" and his movie debut the following year with a small role in the Audrey Tautou film "Happy End" (Which was originally titled "Nowhere To Go But Up") subsequent movie roles included "Garden State" and "School For Scoundrels." A regular role on "Judging Amy" was followed by a string of pilot shows that were not picked up. Then in 2007, "The Big Bang Theory" debuted on CBS. The geekcentric sitcom quickly became a ratings smash for the network, and his inspired portrayal of Dr. Sheldon Cooper, the theoretical genius, has made Jim Parsons the show's breakout star, earning him a TCA award and two emmy nominations.
