The youngest of nine children, Mark Wahlberg was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 5, 1971. He was offered an escape route from his tough environment, when he was recruited along with his brother, Donnie, to join a new pop band. But life in New Kids on The Block was not to Mark's liking and he soon quit. Donnie went on to enjoy global fame and fortune, Mark dropped out of high school and straight into trouble. But as Mark's brushes with authority escalated, Donnie threw him a lifeline. Donnie helped his kid brother land a record deal and produced the music. The single "Good Vibrations" gave Marky Mark and The Funky Bunch an international hit in 1991, catapulting Mark to stardom, thanks in no small part to his good looks and the and the buff physique that he unveiled at every opportunity! Mark began to make forays into acting, appearing in the TV movie "The Substitute" and on the big screen in "Renaissance Man." He earned plaudits for his work opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in 1995's gritty "The Basketball Diaries" and starred in the movies "Fear" and "Traveller." But it was Mark's performance in 1997's Boogie Nights that won rave reviews and confirmed the arrival of a new movie star! He starred in the likes of "Three Kings" and "The Perfect Storm" showed an impressive range in vehicles as diverse as "Planet Of The Apes" and "Rock Star" and showed a flair for comedy in "I Heart Huckabees" he proved he could carry a box-office hit with "The Italian Job" and his performance in "The Departed" was rewarded with Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. The HBO series "Entourage" established his credentials as a producer. And with the Mark Whalberg Youth Foundation, he has shown a commitment to give disadvantaged kids escape routes from the kids of environment that once threatened to swallow him whole.
