Born in Wilmette, Illinois, on September 21, 1950, Bill Murray abandoned pre-med studies at Colorado's Regis University and joined the Second City Chicago improvisational Comedy Troupe. Moving to New York, he was a featured player on the "National Lampoon Radio Hour." before becoming a cast member of a short-lived TV variety show hosted by sportscaster Howard Cosell. When the show was canceled, Murray was recruited to "Saturday Night Live" to replace the departing Chevy Chase. He made an easy transition into movies with the likes of "Meatballs" "Caddyshack" "Stripes" and "Tootsie" and gained a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Venkman in the 1984 Blockbuster hit "Ghostbusters" But following the poor reception of his pet project, "The Razor's Edge," he took a four-year sabbatical and studied philosophy and history in France at the Sorbonne. 1988's "Scrooged" was a big success, as were such movies as "What About Bob?" and "Groundhog Day" subsequent projects ranged from the quirky "Ed Wood" to the Looney Tunes world of "Space Jam" from "Hamlet" to "Charlies Angels" Huge critical acclaim for 1998 "Rushmore" was followed five years later by an Academy Award nomination for "Lost In Translation." Subsequent role choices have been no less eclectic, veering from the offbeat comedy of "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou" to voicing Garfield in two movies and a badger in "Fantastic Mr. Fox."
