Born Thomas Cruise Mapother IV in Syracuse, New York, on July 3 1962. He led a nomadic childhood attending in schools in the U.S. and Candada before the family settled in Glenn Ridge, New Jersey, when he was 14, he trained to enter the Catholic preisthood, but soon developed a passion for acting. He was still a teenager when he made his screen debut in 1981's "Endless Love" and roles in the likes of "The Outsiders" and "Risky Business" quickly followed. The 1986 box-office blockbuster "Top Gun" rocketed Tom Cruise to superstardom. That same year, he starred opposite Paul Newman in the smash hit "The Color of Money." The 1988 hit "Rain Man" earned Dustin Hoffman an Oscar and cemented Tom's place on the Hollywood A-list. For "Born on the Fourth of July" Tom shed his pretty-boy image to play a paralyzed Vietnam vet, earning critical acclaim and the first of his three Academy Award nominations to date. His career went from strength to strength, and movies such as "A Few Good Men" "The Firm" and "Jerry Maguire" were big hits. The first actor in history to star in five consecutive movies that grossed more than $100 million, he began to co-produce his own films, which ensured that his fees for just the first three "Mission Impossible" movies alone added approximately $220 million to his coffers! An outspoken advocate for the church of scientology, he has been married three times. His first marriage to actress, Mimi Rogers, ended in 1990, the same year he wed "Days of Thunder" co-star Nocole Kidman. They separated in 2001, having adopted two children together he married actress Katie Holmes in 2006. The couple, who divorced in 2012, have one daughter together. As he approaches his fifties, Cruise remains one of the biggest stars in the world. Thanks to such hits as "The Last Samurai" "War of the Worlds" and "Valkyrie". He might also have a career in comedy- his outrageous cameo in 2008's "Tropic Thunder" earned him a Golden Globe nomination!
