Born Lea Michele Sarfati in the Bronx, New York, on August 29, 1986, she was only 8 years old when she made her Broadway debut, playing the role of Young Cosette in "Les Miserables" she went on to appear in "Ragtime" in Toronto and New York, and then the Broadway revival of "Fiddler on the Roof" She starred in a regional production of "The Diary of Anne Frank" before being offered her dream role of Eponine in "Les Miserables" but she turned the offer down, electing to stay with "Spring Awakening" as it graduated from off-broadway to Broadway. Her decision was vindicated when the show became a hit and earned her a drama desk award nomination. Mainstream success came with the TV series "Glee" which debuted in May 2009. The role of aspiring Diva Rachel Berry, which was created with Lea in mind, has so far earned her a Sag award for a Golden Globe nomination.
