Born in Canada, in Kapuskasing, Ontario, on August 16, 1954, James Cameron racked up credits in art direction and special effects design, including John Carpenter's "Escape from New York," before making his directorial debut on "Piranha II: The Spawning" In 1981, his major breakthrough came when he wrote and directed "The Terminator" in 1984. The film was a box-office sensation and spawned two sequels and a TV series. Cameron went on to write and direct the sci-fi smashes "Aliens" and "The Abyss" by the time he made "True Lies" in 1994, he had also added producer to his impressive list of credits. Cameron donned the mantle of writer director, co-producer and co-editor, and applied his mastery of special effects to create "Titanic" in 1997. At $200 million, it was the most expensive movie in history, taking $1.8 billion worldwide, and it won eleven academy awards. Cameron turned his attention to the small screen with the creation of "Dark Angel" the 2000 TV series that propelled Jessica Alba to stardom, other projects have included documentaries, such as "Expedition: Bismark" and "The Lost Tomb of Jesus." More than 12 years after "Titanic" Cameron has now returned to movie-making with the 3-D epic "Aviator." Four years in the making, the movie employs revolutionary new methods of computer-generated special effects and animation.
