Robert Carlyle was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on April 14, 1961. Raised by his painter and decorator father, he didn't pursue an acting career until he was in his 20s. After graduating from the Royal Scottish Academy of music and drama, he first gained attention in the U.K. with a starring role in the 1991 Ken Loach film "Riff-Raff" before turning in a chilling performance as a murderous skinhead on episodes of the top-rated British tv drama "Cracker." By the mid-1990s, he was the star of the BBC police series "Hamish Macbeth" Following his role as the psychopath Begbie in the 1996 cult hit movie "Trainspotting" he gained international acclaim as the leader of a troupe of amateur strippers in the surprise hit comedy "The Full Monty" a role that earned him a BAFTA award. His reputation for versatility was enhanced in 1999, when he starred in four movies, playing the troubled father in "Angelas Ashes" a highwayman in "Plunkett & MacLeane," a cannibalistic explorer in "Ravenous" and a classic bond villain in the blockbuster "The World Is Not Enough." That versatility has been much in evidence in his subsequent roles, which have ranged from the romantic lead in "Marilyn Hotchickiss" Ballroom Dancing and Scharm School" to Adolf Hitler in a CBS miniseries, and have included the sword and sorcery fantacy "Eragon" and the zombie movie "28 Weeks Later" He earned an Emmy Award nomination for his work in the 2005 miniseries "Human Trafficking." following his starring role opposite Kiefer Sutherland in the tv movie "24: Redemption," Carlyle's latest small screen project sees him star in the sci-fi series "Stargate Universe"
