Kelly Brianne Clarkson was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on April 24, 1982. Following High School, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue her musical ambitions, but failed to make any significant inroads in the music business, and returned to Texas. A friend suggested she try out for a new TV talent show that was launching, and Kelly became one of 10,000 hopefuls. Auditioning for the debut season of "American Idol" on September 4, 2002, she beat out Justin Guarini to win the first "American Idol" title and a million dollar RCA recording contract. Within a month, her debut single, "A Moment Like This" soared to the top of the Billboard charts, and was followed by her chart-topping debut album- although a movie with fellow finalist Guarini "From Justin To Kelly" performed poorly at the box office. For her second album, 2004's "Breakaway" she introduced a stronger rock element. Propelled by hit singles such as "Since I Been Gone" and "Because of You" the album went multi-platinum worldwide and earned Kelly a slew of honors, including two Grammy awards. In 2006, she was the most-played artist on the U.S. radio. To date, the album has sold more than 13 million copies. Her third album 2007's "My December" was only a moderate success by comparison and a proposed arena tour was downsized to smaller venues. A subsequent change of direction saw her venture into country music, touring alongside Reba McEntire, but for her rock-pop best and saw the album's first single "My Life Would Suck Without You." became an international chart-topping smash.
