English Indie Rock trio Doves can trace its roots back to 1991, when 21-year-old twins Jez and Andy Williams recruited old school friend- and fellow veteran of the manchester music scene- Jimi Goodwin to form Dance Collective Sub Sub. The trio was taken under the wing of seminal Manchester music figure Rob Gretton, manager of Joy Division and New Order, and co-owner of Factory Records and the city's legendary Hacienda nightclub. Signed to Gretton's Rob's Records label, Sub Sub stormed the U.K. pop charts in 1993 with the house music track "Ain't No Love (Ain't No Use)." Three years later, an electrical fire ravaged Sub Sub's rehearsal and recording studio, destroying the master tapes of the band's new material. The disaster was the catalyst for a major shift in direction. Abandoning dance music and the Sub Sub name the trio re-emerged as Doves, veering in an indie rock direction that earned critical acclaim and commercial success. The group's sophomore outing, 2002's "The Last Broadcast" topped the British album charts. 2005 saw the release of the album "Some Cities" and arenas shared with the likes of U2, Coldplay, and Oasis. 2009 sees Doves embark on their first North American tour since 2005 to promote this spring's eagerly anticipated "Kingdom of Rust" an album that has been three years in the making.
