Formed in 1967 by five students at the Elite Charterhouse School in Surrey, England, the band was named Genesis by school alumnus and "Everyone's Gone To The Moon" hitmaker Jonathan King, who recorded the band's debut album. By 1971, and the release of their third album, "Nursery Cryme" the lineup had settled on founding members Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, and Mike Rutherford, guitarist Steve Hackett, and drummer Phil Collins. The group's popularity continued to grow over three further albums, but in 1975 Gabriel left to pursue a solo career. After a fruitless search for a singer, Collins took on vocal duties, and the 1976 album "A Trick of The Tail" outsold all previous albums combined. The following year, the departure of Steve Hackett reduced the band to a trio. Gradually, a more commercial sound evolved, bringing mainstream success. By 1987, Genesis had topped the U.S. charts and sold out four nights at Wembley Stadium. The band's popularity was boosted by the concurrent solo success of Collins, who topped the U.S. singles chart three times just in 1987 alone. During a lengthy break, Rutherford formed Mike + the Mechanics, a side project that soared to the top of the charts with "The Living Years" Genesis reconveined for the 1991's "We Can't Dance" when Collins left the band in 1996, Rutherford and Banks briefly recruited singer Ray Wilson, but the band was soon put on hiatus. In 2006, Collins, Rutherford and Banks reunited for a hugely successful world tour. Having sold some 150 million albums to date, Genesis remains one of the most successful bands in rock history.
