George Lucas Born in modesto, California, on May 14, 1944, George Lucas studied cinematic arts at USC film school. A short film he directed "Electronic Labyrinth Thx 1138 4EB" earned him first prize at the 1967-68 national student film festival. When he teamed up with fellow director Francis Ford Cappola to form American Zoetrope studio. He adapted the short into his first full-length feature film, 1973's "American Graffiti," starring Ron Howard, was a box-office success and earned Oscar nominations. For his third outing as writer/director, he ventured into science fiction. Studio antipathy toward the project saw Lucas forggeo his director's salary in exchange for a large percentage of the gross and all the merchandising rights, released in 1977, "Star Wars" smashed box-office records, garnered 7 Oscar nominations, and launched the empire that made Lucas a multibillionaire. The Lucasfilm studio has spawned such divisions as industrial Light and Magic Skywalker Sound, innovative gaming company Lucasarts, and was the original home to Pixar animation. With good friend Steven Spielberg, he created the Indiana Jones franchise. One of the most successful and influential figures in movie history, in 2006 he donated $175 million to expand USC film school.
