Leona Louise Lewis was born in London, on April 3, 1985. She attended stage school from the age of 6, including the brit school, the same Arts Academy that produced Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash, and Imogen Heap. After leaving school, she worked a number of jobs, including waitress and receptionist, to pay for studio time, but couldn't make headway in her music career. Her boyfriend persuaded her to audition for the third season of "The X Factor" the british singing contest concreted by "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell, Leona won the competition, earning a record deal with Cowell's company in the processionals. Released in late 2006, her debut single, a version of Kelly Clarkson's "A Moment Like This" broke the world record when it was downloaded 50,000 times within 30 minutes, and topped the U.K. charts. Leona's second single, "Bleeding Love" topped the charts worldwide, and made her the first british female since Kim Wilde in 1987, to top the U.S. charts. She then became the first british artist to top the U.S. charts with a debut album when "Spirit" hit the number one spot.
