David eventually earned a theater scholarship to the university of central Missouri, although he later switched majors and graduated with a degree in Graphic Design. After graduation, David concentrated on Axium, the rock band he had formed in high school with drummer Bobby Kerr. The following year as moral support, he accompanied his younger brother, Andrew to an audition for the seventh season of "American Idol" and ended up trying out, too. Andrew didn't take the cut-but David did. He sailed through each round of the competition, and on May 21, 2008. He was crowned the winner in the season finale.
