Christopher Anthony John Martin was born in Devon, England, on March 2, 1977. He met Johnny Buckland in 1996 during their first week at University College London, and the two were soon writing songs together classmate Guy Berryman was recruited on bass, and finally multi-instrumentalist Guy Champion took on Drum duties, although had no drumming experience. The band's original name, Starfish was Jettisoned in favor of Coldplay, a name coined by mutual friend Tim Rice Oxley, who would later find international success as a member of Keane. A couple of indie E.P. releases sparked interest in the group, and after completing their final exams, the quartet signed to a major label. In 2000, on the heels of the hit single "Yellow" the band's first album "Parachutes" debuted at the top of the U.K. charts. It eventually went double-platinum in the United States, earning Cold Play the 2001 best alternative music album Grammy. The second album, 2002's "A Rush of Blood To The Head" cemented that success, and by the time "X&Y" topped the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic in 2005, Cold Play was the biggest band in the world. Meanwhile Chris Martini was collaborated with artists as diverse as Nelly Furtado and Kanye West, and written for a number of others. He married actress Gwenyth Paltrow in 2003, and they now have two children together.
